Questions to Ask Florists

The flowers play a very important role in the wedding - from centrepieces to bouquets and corsages - they help to create the look and mood of the event. So it's crucial to find a florist who understands your vision and has a design style that's similar to the one you're envisioning for your big day

We have put together a list of some key questions to ask before you hire.

Please use this list as a guide only; feel free to remove any questions or add some that relate to your particular event and make sure to get everything in writing in your final contract.

The Basics

  1. How long have you been in business?
  2. How many weddings have you done?
  3. Where did you receive your training?
  4. Do you have my date open?
  5. Have you done events at my ceremony/reception location(s) before?
  6. How many events/weddings do you do each year?
  7. How many other weddings or events will you schedule on the same day/weekend as mine?
  8. Can you provide references?
  9. Do you have a portfolio of live examples of your work?
  10. What other services do you offer (e.g. event management)?
  11. How many consultations do we get?

The Flowers

  1. How would you describe your design style (e.g. traditional, modern, rustic, organic)?
  2. If I give you a picture of a bouquet and/or arrangement that I like, can you recreate it?
  3. Can you do sketches or mock-ups of the arrangements you've described before I sign the contract?
  4. Which flowers/arrangements would you recommend based on the time of year/season, colour palette and budget?
  5. If the flowers we want are not in season, can you provide them?
    1. If so, is there an extra cost?
  6. Are you able to provide organic, pesticide-free, or sustainably grown flower varieties?
  7. Can you work with my cake designer if I decide to add flowers to my wedding cake?
    1. If so, is there an extra cost?
  8. How far in advance of the wedding will you create the arrangements, and how are they stored?
  9. Can you assist me in the preservation of my bouquet after the wedding?
  10. Do you provide other décor (aisle runner, candelabras, trees, arches, votives, mirrors, etc.)?
  11. If so can you supply us with a pricelist?

Cost & Payments

  1. How does your pricing work?
  2. Do you require a minimum budget?
  3. Can you work with my budget?
  4. What recommendations can you give me to maximize my budget?
  5. Do you offer specific packages or is everything customized?
  6. Will you provide me with an itemized floral proposal of all the elements we've discussed, along with prices?
  7. Is there a delivery charge?
  8. How much is the deposit and when is it due?
  9. Do you offer payment plans?
  10. What is your cancellation/refund policy?
  11. Do you charge for a consultation?
  12. Do you charge for breakages?
  13. Is there an extra charge for a tossing bouquet?
  14. Do you have an extra charge for the setup and breakdown of the floral décor?
  15. Are there any additional fees that have not already been taken into account?


  1. How far in advance do we need to secure your services?
  2. Will you simply be dropping off flowers, or will you be helping set up?
  3. Will you help move the flowers from the ceremony to the reception site?
    1. If so, do you charge a fee for this?
  4. Will you be doing my arrangements yourself or would it be another floral designer?
  5. Are you available to do a venue walk-through before the wedding date?
    1. If so, do you charge a fee for this?
  6. Will you be using any pictures of our wedding arrangements in your advertising?
